Die Videoarbeit reflektiert die menschlichen Verhältnisse in den frühen 1900er Jahren, als das Fischen noch ein existenzielles Handwerk auf den Ostseeinseln war. Die Arbeit basiert auf historischen Fotografien von Mathias Klintberg aus der gotländischen Gemeinde Lau und einem alten baltischen Wiegenlied.
Mathias Klintberg war von 1888 bis 1912 Dozent an Wisby Läroverk (Gymnasium) und von 1889 bis 1907 Direktor von Gotlands Fornsal (heute Gotlands Museum). Er dokumentierte mit einer geliehenen Kamera die verschwindende Volkskultur und das tägliche Leben der Fischer und ihren alten gotländischen Dialekt gutamålet, dessen Intonation er mit Noten festhielt.

The video work is a reflection on human conditions in the early 1900s when fishing and its crafts were essential on the islands of the Baltic Sea. The work is based on some of Mathias Klintberg’s historical photographs from the Gotlandic parish of Lau and an old Baltic lullaby.
Mathias Klintberg was lecturer at Wisby Läroverk (grammar school) 1888-1912 and director of Gotland’s Fornsal (today Gotlands Museum) 1889-1907. He documented with a borrowed camera the disappearing folk culture and and daily life, with the fundamental fishery. He also documented the old gotlandic dialect, gutamålet, which intonation he captured with notes.
Berit Ångman Svedjemo was born1962 in Särna, Sweden and she lives in Visby, Gotland, Sweden. Since the mid-1990’s she´s been working with video, drawing, embroidery, installations and land art. Her art deals with existential questions, based on personal experiences and actions that are connected to human conditions. She is educated in art and art history from university of Gothenburg, Stockholm and Uppsala.
